This incredible little book illustrates, in only 80 pages, the diabolical manner in which a society can get caught up in its prejudices and biases from which it is nearly impossible to extricate itself.
Alfred Dreyfus was a French officer of Jewish heritage in 1890. There appeared a hand-written note which was evidence of treason, selling out to Germany. In short order, Dreyfus was accused, primarily because he was Jewish and anti-Semitism was rife in France at the time.
Handwriting experts disagreed as to the author of the note. Some claimed it "could" have been written by someone other than Dreyfus, one said it definitely wasn't Dreyfus. Nevertheless, the military wanted to hear only that Dreyfus wrote it, such was their hatred of Jews.
Dreyfus was sent to prison for five years while his wife, family members, and other interested people worked to clear his name.
His biggest obstacle to clearing his name? Pride. The French army, realizing that it could be greatly embarrassed if proven that it convicted an innocent man, refused to reopen the case.
Eventually, Alfred Dreyfus was cleared and his name exonerated, thank God!
This dramatic occurrence still has its impact on the world today, especially as pertaining to the relationship between the military and the civilian world.
